Introverts, being naturally inclined to keep to themselves, are at an obvious disadvantage when it comes to language learning. While they may be able to take in lessons just like everybody else, they can end up really struggling when it comes to getting speaking practice.
If you are one such person, hitting the streets and speaking to random people (as some learners do) isn’t likely your cup of tea. So how do you get your opportunities at using the target language?
- Enroll in a class. The big advantage of enrolling in a classroom type setting is the presence of people you can readily practice the language with. If you have access to one, we suggest going just for the chance to meet other language learners (you can still use your language software at home if you find the instruction there more helpful).
- Take small steps out of your comfort zone. Rule out approaching strangers and initiating conversations if that sounds too frightening. Instead, break out of your comfort zone using small steps. Start by using the language in more routine settings, like when ordering food or asking directions from a police officer.
- Find a learning partner. Solicit a fellow language learner in your area. Ask your friends if they know someone who’s learning the same target language or take out an ad on Craigslist to find them.
- Speak with people online. If you feel more comfortable talking with people online, you can opt for practice on Skype or a similar service.
